"Best of the Best: Best Small Town" Voted no. 1 by readers of The Scotsman, and described:
"MOFFAT, Dumfriesshire: Up to No. 1 as recommendations flood in. "Please include the little-known Craigieburn Garden near Moffat (on the A708 to St. Mary's Loch), a garden owned by Janet Wheatcroft situated in a deep wooded gorge and largely created by gardener Datenji Sherpa who came to Scotland from Nepal." says Robert E. Stewart from Merchiston. "He has filled the garden with Himalayan plants and has some seeds and plants for sale in his nursery." Elizabeth Roberts has praised its Well Street shops, following mentions for the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall and Colvin Fountain, adding to praise as a classic Victorian spa town and for its boating pond and sweet shop.

Moffat Town HallHigh Street Moffat
The elegant Georgian fronted building, now the Town Hall was built in 1827 by the Moffat Bath Company as Moffat Bath Halls. When originally completed the Baths Halls comprised reading rooms, an assembly hall and bathing suites.
Taking the Moffat Waters

The great, good and infirm of the day bathed in water piped down from the Mineral Well. Taking a hot mineral bath was two shillings and cold one shilling - considerable sums in those days.
Moffat Bath Hall Advertisement [1863]

" The hot mineral bath is most used. It may be taken at any hour of the day: the usual time of immersion is twenty minutes and the degree of heat 96 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold baths, common water on mineral may also be had as well as shower baths and vapour baths."

Lets Live Local and Moffat Online
Lets Live Local is the Transition initiative for Moffat and the surrounding area, set up to find ways in which our communities can live happy, rich and fulfilling lives, no matter what economic, climatic or resource shocks the future throws at us.
We’re working to do this by relocalising - making it possible for our community to meet as many of our needs as we wish from within the local area - to live, work, shop and enjoy life on our own doorsteps. Find out more about the project here www.letslivelocal.co.uk
As part of our project, Lets Live Local has set up Moffat Online, a community networking site, where you can find out more about the area, meet the neighbours, develop ideas and make new connections. It’s free to join – just go to www.moffatonline.co.uk to sign up.
